Dental crowns are a versatile dental treatment option which can restore broken, decayed, or missing teeth. Dr. Chan Wilkhu and Dr. Mark Moffitt have several treatment options available, including same-day dental crowns which are fabricated using our onsite milling unit. For patients who are better candidates for a dental bridge or custom crown, we work with a trusted local lab to help match the look, function, and feel of a natural tooth. We can also place implant-supported crowns at our Merritt Island, FL, office.
During your initial consultation, one of our doctors will assess the status of your oral health to ensure that a dental crown is the best choice for you. Generally, dental crowns can help address:
Additionally, dental crowns can help enhance cosmetic imperfections such as severe discoloration or disproportionately sized teeth. If you have a missing tooth, you can restore function to your smile and avoid future problems such as shifting teeth and misalignment with an implant-supported crown or bridge. For most patients, Dr. Wilkhu can place and restore implants at his office without referring you to an outside specialist.
If you have a missing tooth, you will undergo dental implant surgery approximately four to six months prior to receiving your permanent crown. Once your implant is fully healed, you will return to our office to have your permanent crown attached to your implant.
Depending on your needs, budget, and desired aesthetics, we can create your crown from a variety of materials including porcelain, IPS e.max®, or zirconia.
For patients receiving a traditional crown, one of our doctors will first reshape your tooth to safely and securely accommodate your new dental crown. A technician from our partner lab will come to our office to take impressions of your smile and match the material of your crown to the shade of your smile. If your damaged tooth is located in a discreet area of the mouth, one of our doctors will gather digital impressions to upload directly to the CEREC®, or Chairside Economical Restoration of Esthetic Ceramics, unit.
Once your permanent crown has been created by either CEREC® or the lab, we will use special cement to adhere the crown to your tooth. With proper care and regular dental visits, crowns can maintain their brilliance and function for several years.
Depending on your case, our office may use CEREC® to create stunning, highly durable same-day crowns. CEREC® allows us to create dental crowns using computer-aided design and manufacturing. The machine is equipped with a milling unit that directly translates the digital design into a new custom crown out of a single block of porcelain. In most cases, your CEREC® crown can be ready for placement on the same day of your initial appointment.
Our decade-long relationship with our trusted local lab is one of the factors that our patients appreciate the most when undergoing restorative treatment. The lab technicians cater to each and every patient. They visit our office to provide an in-person shade match to ensure your restorations closely mirror the texture and color of your surrounding teeth. Depending on your needs, budget, and desired aesthetics, we can create your crowns from a variety of materials including porcelain, IPS e.max®, or zirconia.
Dental crowns can be customized to fit your needs, budget, and cosmetic goals. If you are unsure whether a lab-manufactured or CEREC® crown is right for you, our doctors can share the benefits of each method during your initial consultation.
